“8 New & Noteworthy Hotels 2013”

Choosing a hotel in New York just got more interesting, thanks to these buzz-worthy openings, from a high-tech Hyatt in Times Square to a playful motel in the Rockaways.

It seems that 2013 is shaping up to be a banner year for hotel openings in New York City. And these new hotels are as diverse as New York itself. Some are located in historic buildings (including a late 1800s seminary and a 1912 hat factory) with preserved period details and nods to the building’s past life like a speakeasy-style lounge on the site of an actual speakeasy. Others give a nod to New York’s future, like a pod-style hotel in towering new building north of Times Square.

Jade Hotel
Opened February 2013
The Jade Hotel may have opened this year, but the ambiance is more 1923 than 2013. The 113 rooms have Art Deco touches like headboards with bold graphic prints and dramatic red velvet drapes (as well as cheeky old-fashioned features like rotary phones). The Greenwich Village hotel also has a cozy lounge with purple velvet couches and windows covered in matching drapes, while the adjacent library is stocked with New York-themed books by local scribes like Kerouac. At the Grape & Vine bar and restaurant (named in honor of a long-gone nearby tavern that is said to have inspired the phrase “heard it through the grapevine”), you can make like Gatsby and ease into the night over potent cocktails to the tune of tinkling jazz piano. 52 W 13th St., 212-375-1300,
